Do You Need Cash in Lagos?

A little. Lagos is one of the Algarve's busiest summer towns, and its restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and boat-trip kiosks all take cards. Where cash still helps is on the beaches and the water: a sunbed, an ice cream, a beach-bar beer, and the small fishing boats that wait at the foot of the Ponta da Piedade steps. Carry €30 to €60. The Portugal money guide explains how Multibanco machines work nationally.

Where You Will Need Cash

Fishermen's boats at the Ponta da Piedade steps. Sunbeds and umbrellas on Meia Praia and Dona Ana. Beach-bar kiosks. The Saturday market by the bus station. Small pastelarias. Tips.

Where Cards Work Fine

Restaurants in the old town and the marina. Boat and kayak operators with kiosks on the avenida. Hotels and holiday rentals. Supermarkets. Surf schools on Meia Praia. Train tickets at the station machines.

Grotto Boats and Kayaks at Ponta da Piedade

The headland is the reason to come. Just south of town, the golden cliffs of Ponta da Piedade are cut into arches, sea stacks and grottoes that can only be seen properly from the water. There are three ways in, and they are priced differently.

Boats from the marina. Operators along the Avenida dos Descobrimentos and in the marina sell trips of around an hour in small boats for roughly €15 to €25 a person, with longer coastal trips, dolphin watching and Benagil cruises for more. They take cards at the kiosks.

The fishermen at the steps. At the foot of the long stairway down from the lighthouse, local fishermen run shorter trips in small wooden boats for a similar price, collected in cash before you get in. Agree the price and the length of the trip first.

Kayaks and paddleboards. Guided kayak trips from Batata beach or Camilo beach cost around €30 to €40 and take you through arches the boats cannot reach. Book online by card in summer; they fill up. The walk along the clifftop boardwalk from Dona Ana to the lighthouse is free.

Benagil Cave, Beaches and Parking

Benagil is now a look, not a landing. The famous sea cave with a hole in its roof lies along the coast east of Lagos. Boat trips leave from Lagos and Portimão, typically €25 to €40 from Lagos. Since 2024 the authorities have restricted landing on the cave beach and swimming in from boats, so most trips view the cave from the water. Read what you are buying before you pay.

Beaches are free; comfort is not. Lagos's beaches, from the long sweep of Meia Praia to the coves of Dona Ana, Camilo and Batata, are public and free. A pair of sunbeds and an umbrella costs around €15 to €25 a day in summer, paid to an attendant, often in cash.

Parking. In summer, the car parks above the coves fill by mid-morning, and central Lagos's street parking is metered by machine or app. The large car parks near the marina and the bus station are the easiest. Walking or a local bus is simpler than driving between the old town and the beaches.

The Couvert and Other Restaurant Customs

The basket on the table. In Lagos, as across Portugal, waiters bring bread, butter, olives and sometimes cheese or sardine pate before you order. This is the couvert, and it is charged if you eat it, typically €1 to €3 per item. If you do not want it, ask for it to be taken away before you touch it; nobody will mind.

Grilled fish is priced by weight. Fresh fish such as sea bream and sea bass is often listed by the kilo. Ask the waiter what the fish you are shown will cost before it goes on the grill.

The pricing ladder. Restaurants on the marina and the main square charge resort prices. A street or two back in the old town, a prato do dia lunch with a drink is around €10 to €14. The Mercado Municipal sells fish and fruit downstairs and has cafes upstairs.

ATMs in Lagos

Look for these logos. Every bank machine in Portugal is on Multibanco.

Caixa GeralCaixa Geral
Millennium BCPMillennium BCP
Novo BancoNovo Banco
SantanderSantander

ATM Locations

Multibanco machines run along the Avenida dos Descobrimentos, around Praça Gil Eanes and in the old town. Caixa Geral de Depósitos and Millennium BCP both have branches in the centre, and Multibanco machines charge nothing at the machine itself. Portugal has no Bank of America Global ATM Alliance partner.

⚠ The Machines That Are Not Multibanco

In summer, independent cash machines appear on the busiest streets and near the marina, often with Euronet branding. They are not part of Multibanco, charge a fee for a foreign card, and push a conversion into dollars. Walk to a bank. Our DCC explainer covers the conversion screen.

Getting to Lagos, and Getting Around

From Faro airport. Faro Airport is about 90 kilometres east. Express buses run to Lagos in around 1.5 to 2 hours; the regional train from Faro station, at the end of the Algarve line, takes around 1 hour 45 minutes for under €10, with tickets from machines that take cards. A taxi or private transfer costs around €100 or more.

Driving. The A22 motorway has electronic tolls with no booths, which catch out drivers of foreign cars; our Faro money guide explains how to pay them. The old N125 coast road is toll-free and slower.

Local buses and taxis. Lagos's small town buses, the A Onda, link the old town, the beaches and Meia Praia for a fare of around €1 to €2. Taxis wait near the bus station and the marina, and Uber and Bolt operate.

Sagres and the west coast. Buses run to Sagres, about 40 minutes west. The beaches of the Costa Vicentina beyond have few facilities, so take cash and water.

Tipping in Lagos

Portuguese norms apply, as the Portugal guide explains: no service charge, and terminals rarely offer a tip line. Round up, or leave 5 to 10 percent in coins for good table service. Boat skippers and kayak guides appreciate a few euros; the fishermen at the steps price that into the fare.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a boat trip to Ponta da Piedade?

Small boats from Lagos marina and the beach below the headland charge around 15 to 25 euros a person for a trip of roughly an hour through the grottoes. Guided kayak or paddleboard trips cost around 30 to 40 euros. Most operators take cards at their kiosks; the fishermen at the beach steps often want cash.

Can you visit Benagil cave from Lagos?

Yes, by boat. Boat trips along the coast to Benagil cave leave from Lagos and Portimao. Since 2024 the Portuguese authorities have restricted landing on the cave beach and swimming in, so most trips now view it from the water. Check the current rules and what the trip includes before you pay.

Does Lagos have a tourist tax?

Not at the time of writing. Several Algarve municipalities, including Albufeira, Lagoa, Faro and Portimao, charge a tourist tax of around 1 to 2 euros a person per night, but Lagos has not introduced one. Check your booking in case that changes.

Do I need cash in Lagos?

A little. Restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and most boat and kayak operators take cards. Keep 30 to 60 euros for beach bars, sunbeds, the Saturday market, small cafes and the fishermen's boats. Multibanco machines are everywhere in the old town and along the avenida.

What is the couvert in Portuguese restaurants?

The bread, butter, olives and sometimes cheese or pate put on the table before you order. It is not free: each item is charged if you eat it, typically 1 to 3 euros each. If you do not want it, ask for it to be taken away before you start.

How do I get from Faro airport to Lagos?

By bus or train, or by car. Express buses run from Faro to Lagos in about 1.5 to 2 hours. The regional train from Faro station takes around 1 hour 45 minutes for under 10 euros. A taxi or transfer costs around 100 euros or more. If you drive, the A22 motorway has electronic tolls.
