Quick answer. First, check your ticket: Goa has two airports. Dabolim (GOI), near Vasco da Gama in the south-centre, is the old one; Manohar International at Mopa (GOX), in the far north, opened in 2023, and many airlines moved there. From Dabolim, a prepaid taxi or GoaMiles cab to Panaji costs roughly ₹1,000 to ₹1,200, and more to the northern beaches. For rupees, use an SBI or another bank's machine in arrivals, not the exchange counter. Visitors may bring in only ₹25,000 in Indian notes, so most withdraw on arrival. India has no Bank of America Global ATM Alliance partner.

Where to get Indian Rupee at GOI

At Dabolim the bank machine is the cheapest source of rupees, even with a per-withdrawal fee; the exchange counter is the trap. The figures assume you withdraw the rupee equivalent of $100, at roughly ₹88 = $1.

Bank machines at Goa Dabolim (GOI), and the taxi counters

Dabolim shares its runway with an Indian Navy air station, which is why the airport is small for the traffic it carries and why some flights are restricted at certain hours. Its single integrated terminal, opened in 2013, handles both domestic and international flights. Bank machines from State Bank of India, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are in the arrivals area, alongside exchange counters that build a wide margin into their rate. Walk past the counters. Indian machines often cap a single withdrawal at ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 and may charge a fee per transaction, so withdraw once for a few days rather than several times. Once you reach the coast, our Goa money guide covers the beach shacks, scooter hire and the places that only take cash or UPI.

Arrivals hall (domestic and international)

IndiGo, Air India, Akasa, SpiceJet and the remaining international and charter flights

Bank machines from SBI, HDFC and ICICI are in the public arrivals area. Choose a bank machine, decline any offer to convert into dollars, and take a mix of notes: beach shacks struggle to change ₹500 notes early in the day.

Prepaid taxi and GoaMiles counters

Fixed-fare taxis to Panaji, Margao and the beach towns

Prepaid counters and the government-backed GoaMiles app desk are outside arrivals. Fares are fixed by destination and paid up front, so there is nothing to haggle over at the car. Avoid drivers who approach you inside the hall.

Mopa (GOX), the other airport

Many domestic and international flights now use Manohar International at Mopa, about 1.5 hours north

If your ticket says GOX, you are not landing here. Mopa has its own bank machines and taxi counters, and is closer to the northern beaches such as Arambol and Morjim. A taxi between the two airports takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Do you actually need cash at Goa Dabolim (GOI)?

Not for the taxi: the prepaid counter and GoaMiles take cards or digital payment. But Goa itself still runs on rupees in places:

Prepaid taxi or GoaMiles to Panaji (roughly ₹1,000-1,200): About 45-55 minutes; fixed fare paid at the counter or in the app.

Prepaid taxi to Calangute and Baga (roughly ₹1,500-2,000): About 1-1.25 hours to the northern beach belt; Mopa is closer if your flight goes there.

Prepaid taxi to Colva and the south (roughly ₹800-1,200): Dabolim is the closer airport for South Goa's beaches.

Kadamba bus via Vasco (under ₹100): Cheap but slow, with a change; cash for the conductor.

⚠ DCC trap. When the ATM or terminal asks if you want to be charged in your home currency instead of the local currency, always decline and choose the local currency. Accepting locks in a 3-13 percent markup that your no-FX-fee card cannot undo. Full DCC explainer →

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need cash to get from Goa Dabolim (GOI) to Goa?

No. The prepaid taxi counters and GoaMiles take cards or digital payment, and the fare is fixed. Once on the coast, carry rupees for beach shacks, scooter hire, markets and small shops, many of which take only cash or UPI.

Can I order Indian Rupee before flying?

Rarely worth it. India lets visitors bring in up to ₹25,000 in rupee notes, but rupees are hard to buy abroad and dealers' rates are poor, so most travellers withdraw at a bank machine in arrivals. CEI Currency Exchange ships other currencies to a US address in 2-5 days if your trip continues elsewhere.

Which Goa airport am I flying into, GOI or GOX?

Check the airport code on your ticket. GOI is Dabolim, near Vasco da Gama in central-south Goa. GOX is Manohar International at Mopa in the far north, opened in January 2023. They are about 1.5 to 2 hours apart by road, and many airlines have moved some or all of their Goa flights to Mopa.

How much is a taxi from Dabolim airport to Panaji?

Roughly 1,000 to 1,200 rupees for a prepaid taxi or a GoaMiles cab, a journey of about 45 to 55 minutes. The fare is fixed and paid at the counter or in the app. To the northern beaches such as Calangute and Baga, expect roughly 1,500 to 2,000 rupees.

Can I bring Indian rupees into India?

Visitors who are not residents may bring in up to 25,000 rupees in Indian notes, except citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh. Most travellers find it easier and cheaper to withdraw rupees from a bank machine on arrival.
